GREENHOUSE BUILDING PLANS 101 – EASY TIPS ON WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
If you’re a gardener a gardener that lacks the carpentry skills to build construct your own greenhouse, don’t worry too much, there are hundreds of backyard horticulturist like you taking the plunge to build their first enclosure. Here are the quick basics for your greenhouse building plans.

First things first, a greenhouse doesn’t need to be expensive or big, but it does need some careful planning.
Location – Your greenhouse should be situated where it can get the most sunlight. Watch for shadows throughout the day. Ideally, you want to catch the morning rays to start nourishing your plants early.
Placing your structure on the east side is good in colder locations, as it tends to catch most of the winter months sunlight. Your focus should be on placing your greenhouse where it can get the most sunlight during the winter months. Note, that the sun is lower in the southern sky during these months, which means big shadowing.
Big trees, can provide needed shade from an afternoon summer sun, but you should make sure that the shadows won’t hit the greenhouse in the early hours.
Structure Material – There are only a few types of frames that are usually used. Wood, Steel, or Plastic Pipes. Each has their advantages and disadvantages such. Plastic pipes, for instance is the easiest to work with but don’t handle wind and snow so well. While wood is subject to erosion, yet is probably the most aesthetically pleasing.
Cover Materials – To protect and insulate your plants from the elements, you have a variety of choices. Glass is low in maintenance and allows a high degree of sunlight to enter. The problem with glass is that it breaks easily and it might be a little more challenging to put together. Fiberglass is light and durable. Stronger than glass and provides the same amount of permanence, fiberglass is a popular choice. The only drawback is that it loses its permanency in time as compared to glass. Plastic film is a very popular choice for those watching their budgets. Inexpensive and easy to handle, plastics come in a wide variety of styles to fit your needs. The only drawback is that they’re not as durable and need to be changed more frequently.
If you’re willing to think out of the box, you can use anything from old fish aquariums placed upside down on a few isolated plants to actually create a super mini-greenhouse or make some space in your garage, which is basically like a giant commercial greenhouse and you have close access to water and electricity.
Let’s face it; you’ve always wanted a greenhouse but weren’t too sure if you could pull it off. A greenhouse does not have to be big and complicated. Start off small and slowly scale up as you get more experience with an easier build.
